Maintaining intimacy after child birth

Published

on

The arrival of children brings immense joy but can also strain the intimacy and connection between partners.

Think about it: when a baby comes into your life, everything changes. Your priorities shift, sleep becomes a luxury, and the time you once had for each other gets swallowed up by parenting duties. It’s natural to feel a bit disconnected from your partner during this period.

The late-night feedings, diaper changes, and constant attention a baby requires can leave little room for the closeness and romance you once shared. But don’t worry, it’s completely normal.

The key is to recognize these changes and make a conscious effort to nurture your relationship amidst the demands of parenthood and maintaining a strong,  romantic bond.

To reconnect with your partner and preserve intimacy after having children, you have to:

Prioritize quality time

Quality time is essential for reconnecting with your partner. Schedule regular date nights, even if they are at home after the children are asleep. This may sound delusional but simple activities like watching a movie, cooking together, or enjoying a quiet conversation can strengthen your bond and provide a break from parenting duties.

Communicate openly

Open communication is the foundation of a healthy relationship. Share your thoughts, feelings, and concerns with your partner, and encourage them to do the same. Honest conversations help address issues, prevent misunderstandings, and foster a deeper connection.

Show appreciation

Expressing appreciation for your partner’s efforts and qualities can reignite feelings of love and respect. It also makes them feel seen. Compliment each other, acknowledge small acts of kindness, and show gratitude for their support. These gestures reinforce your emotional connection and remind each other of your mutual affection.

Rediscover shared interests

Engage in activities that you both enjoy and that initially brought you together. Whether it’s a hobby, sport, or cultural interest, participating in shared activities can rekindle your bond and create new memories. This shared time reinforces your partnership and provides a sense of unity.

Maintain physical intimacy

Physical intimacy is a vital aspect of a romantic relationship. Prioritize physical affection, such as hugging, holding hands, or cuddling, even when sexual intimacy might be challenging due to exhaustion or time constraints. These gestures of physical connection maintain closeness and affection. You’re each other’s Romeo and Juliet, remember?

Practice patience and understanding

Parenthood can be overwhelming, and it’s important to practice patience and understanding with each other, otherwise you’ll easily lose it. Recognize that both partners may be adjusting to new roles and responsibilities. Approach challenges with empathy and work together to find solutions.

Create rituals and traditions

Establishing rituals and traditions can provide stability and a sense of togetherness. Whether it’s a weekly date night, a morning coffee ritual, or a special family activity, these practices strengthen your bond and create lasting memories. You don’t have to wait until Christmas to bond over that Pilau.

Seek support

Don’t hesitate to seek support if needed. Enlist the help of family members, friends, or babysitters to provide occasional childcare, allowing you and your partner to spend time together. Additionally, consider couples counseling if you’re facing significant challenges in your relationship.

Plan mini getaways

Even short getaways can significantly rejuvenate your relationship. Plan an overnight trip or a weekend escape without the children to focus solely on each other. These mini getaways provide an opportunity to relax, reconnect, and enjoy each other’s company away from daily distractions.

Foster emotional intimacy

Emotional intimacy is as important as physical closeness. Share your dreams, fears, and aspirations with your partner. Engage in deep, meaningful conversations that go beyond daily logistics and parenting concerns. Building emotional intimacy strengthens your connection and deepens your understanding of each other.

Keep the romance alive

Keep the spark alive by surprising each other with small romantic gestures. Just like in old days, write love notes, plan surprise dates, or give thoughtful gifts that show your partner you are thinking of them. These acts of romance demonstrate your love and commitment, helping to maintain a loving and intimate relationship.

Reconnecting with your partner after having children requires intentional effort and dedication.

Don’t let the spark fade just because you’re busy with the kids. Make the effort, and you’ll find it’s worth every bit. And if you need a little extra push, consider planning a mini-getaway to rekindle your bond. Think about spending a weekend at the serene shores of Diani Beach, enjoying the breathtaking views at Lake Naivasha, or unwinding in the luxurious lodges of the Maasai Mara. These trips, even if short, can work wonders for your relationship, giving you the time and space to focus solely on each other. So, take that step because your relationship deserves it.

Kenyans are mourning the loss of Blessed Claire Muthoni, a brave 12-year-old girl from Kihuri in Othaya, Nyeri County, who passed away while undergoing specialised cancer treatment in New Delhi. Claire had been fighting stage 4 cancer for over three years.

The aggressive disease took a heavy toll on her young body, eventually leading to the amputation of one of her legs. Despite the pain and the many challenges she faced, Claire remained hopeful and courageous throughout her journey, inspiring many who followed her story.

On January 19, 2026, she travelled to India with her mother in search of advanced treatment aimed at saving her remaining leg and managing the cancer that had spread to her lungs. The journey was filled with hope, supported by Kenyans from all walks of life who contributed towards her treatment and kept her in their prayers.

A brave fight

Shock as Section of Gikomba Shoe Market Demolished Overnight

Published

on

Traders at Nairobi’s bustling Gikomba Market are counting heavy losses after a section of the popular shoe market (mitumba shoe section) was demolished overnight by Nairobi City County enforcement teams. The operation took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Videos and photos circulating on social media show destroyed merchandise and devastated traders who arrived at the market this morning to find their businesses in ruins. According to reports, the county government carried out the demolition after an eviction notice lapsed. This happened even though the High Court (Environment and Land Court) had earlier issued and extended conservatory orders in March 2026, halting mass demolitions and evictions at Gikomba and surrounding areas along the Nairobi River.

Repeated demolitions

Demolitions at Gikomba are not new. As far back as 1977, the original market was brought down by the government to pave the way for light industries. In recent years, attention has shifted to the riparian land along the Nairobi River, with authorities proposing to expand the buffer zone from 30 metres to 50 metres in a bid to control flooding.

Many traders have raised concerns over what they describe as poor consultation, shifting relocation plans and the lack of a clear and secure alternative site. There are also growing fears that the process could open the door to land grabbing and cartel involvement.

Impact

For most traders at Gikomba, the market is more than just a place of business. It is their only source of livelihood. Repeated fires and demolitions have created a cycle of uncertainty, financial strain and constant rebuilding. Many small business owners say they struggle to recover after each loss, only to face another setback months later.

Calls for improved fire safety measures, fair relocation plans and meaningful engagement with authorities continue to grow louder. Without long term and sustainable solutions, Gikomba traders will continue to bear the high cost of operating in one of Nairobi’s busiest yet most vulnerable markets.
