Digital Detox: How Unplugging Can Improve Focus and Learning

Published

on

Imagine yourself  seated at the dinner table, trying to have a meaningful conversation with your child, but their eyes are glued to a screen.

Or perhaps, after a long day, you find yourself endlessly scrolling through your phone instead of unwinding or catching up with your family.

The digital age has become the new reality for many parents and children.

While technology undoubtedly makes life easier, its overuse can quietly rob us of focus, meaningful connections, and the ability to learn effectively.

This is where a digital detox becomes not just a necessity but a gift we can give ourselves and our families.

Well, a digital detox doesn’t mean throwing away devices or disconnecting forever. Instead, it’s about creating intentional breaks from screens to foster better habits, improve focus, and prioritize what truly matters.

For parents, it’s a powerful way to reset family dynamics and help children develop healthy, sustainable relationships with technology.

Let’s dive into how unplugging can transform focus and learning for both parents and children.

The Impact of Excessive Screen Time

Modern parenting often comes with the challenge of competing for attention against smartphones, tablets, video games, and other digital distractions.

Research has shown that excessive screen time can lead to reduced attention spans, poor sleep, and even behavioural issues in children.

For parents, it can trigger stress and make multitasking a constant battle.

Screens have a sneaky way of pulling us into their orbit, whether it’s responding to work emails or catching up on social media.

Over time, this affects our ability to focus, learn new things, and be present in the moment.

Children, in particular, are at a higher risk. Their developing brains are highly impressionable, and prolonged exposure to screens can hamper their ability to concentrate, retain information, and think critically.

Why a Digital Detox Matters

Think of the brain as a muscle. Just like physical muscles need rest after exercise to function optimally, the brain needs time to recharge and reset.

Unplugging from devices gives the brain a much-needed breather, allowing it to process information more effectively.

For children, time away from screens opens the door to imaginative play, exploration, and social interaction—key components for cognitive and emotional development.

It also allows them to rediscover the joy of learning in natural and hands-on ways.

For parents, a digital detox can help reduce stress, improve focus, and create opportunities for bonding with their children.

Small Changes, Big Results

Embarking on a digital detox doesn’t have to feel like a daunting mission.

Small, intentional changes can have a profound impact. Start with these simple steps:

1. Set Screen-Free Zones

Create boundaries by designating certain areas of the home, like the dining room or bedrooms, as screen-free zones. This encourages face-to-face interaction and mindful eating habits.

2. Establish Device Curfews

Ensure that devices are turned off at least an hour before bedtime to improve sleep quality. Consider using this time for bedtime stories, journaling, or reflective conversations with your child.

3. Plan Tech-Free Activities

Whether it’s a weekend hike, a family board game night, or baking together, having tech-free activities ensures that everyone remains engaged and connected.

4. Lead by Example

Children learn by observing.

When parents model healthy tech habits, such as putting phones away during conversations or limiting their own screen time, children are more likely to follow suit.

The Hidden Gifts of Unplugging

The beauty of a digital detox lies not just in what you eliminate but in what you gain.

Without constant digital distractions, children develop better focus, improved memory retention, and an ability to process information more deeply.

They are more likely to discover hobbies, enjoy outdoor play, and strengthen their creativity.

For parents, unplugging creates moments to reconnect with themselves, their children, and their surroundings.

You might find that conversations become more meaningful, and there’s a renewed sense of balance and calm in the home.

These small victories accumulate, fostering a healthier family dynamic.

Balancing Tech and Life

The goal of a digital detox isn’t to vilify technology but to create a balance that prioritizes well-being.

Technology is a tool, and like any tool, its usefulness depends on how it’s used.

By setting boundaries and creating intentional offline moments, families can enjoy the benefits of technology without letting it take over their lives.

It’s also important to involve children in conversations about the benefits of unplugging.

Help them understand how reducing screen time can enhance their ability to learn, focus, and connect with the world around them.

When children feel part of the decision-making process, they’re more likely to embrace the change.

So, the next time you feel tempted to reach for your phone or let your child have “just one more hour” of screen time, pause and consider this: what could you both gain by unplugging instead?

It’s not about perfection, but progress. And with each small step, you’ll find yourselves not just surviving the digital age, but thriving in it—together.

on

Kenyans are mourning the loss of Blessed Claire Muthoni, a brave 12-year-old girl from Kihuri in Othaya, Nyeri County, who passed away while undergoing specialised cancer treatment in New Delhi. Claire had been fighting stage 4 cancer for over three years.

The aggressive disease took a heavy toll on her young body, eventually leading to the amputation of one of her legs. Despite the pain and the many challenges she faced, Claire remained hopeful and courageous throughout her journey, inspiring many who followed her story.

On January 19, 2026, she travelled to India with her mother in search of advanced treatment aimed at saving her remaining leg and managing the cancer that had spread to her lungs. The journey was filled with hope, supported by Kenyans from all walks of life who contributed towards her treatment and kept her in their prayers.

A brave fight

While in India, Claire underwent several chemotherapy sessions. Unfortunately, her condition worsened after developing complications, leading to her admission to the Intensive Care Unit. She passed away in hospital last week, leaving behind a grieving family and a nation that had stood with her.

On Monday, March 30, 2026, her remains arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The atmosphere at the airport was filled with grief as family members, friends and well-wishers gathered to receive her. Her mother returned home alone, carrying a loss no parent should have to endure.

Claire will be laid to rest in her home area of Othaya in the coming days, as her family begins the difficult process of saying their final goodbyes.

Her story touched thousands across the country, many of whom followed her journey through updates and fundraising efforts. She became a symbol of strength and resilience, and her passing has deeply affected those who had hoped to see her recover.

Beyond the grief, her story has once again brought attention to the challenges families face when dealing with childhood cancer in Kenya. The high cost of specialised treatment, limited access to advanced care locally, and the emotional and financial strain on families often force many to seek treatment abroad.

Shock as Section of Gikomba Shoe Market Demolished Overnight

Published

on

Traders at Nairobi’s bustling Gikomba Market are counting heavy losses after a section of the popular shoe market (mitumba shoe section) was demolished overnight by Nairobi City County enforcement teams. The operation took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Videos and photos circulating on social media show destroyed merchandise and devastated traders who arrived at the market this morning to find their businesses in ruins. According to reports, the county government carried out the demolition after an eviction notice lapsed. This happened even though the High Court (Environment and Land Court) had earlier issued and extended conservatory orders in March 2026, halting mass demolitions and evictions at Gikomba and surrounding areas along the Nairobi River.

Repeated demolitions

Demolitions at Gikomba are not new. As far back as 1977, the original market was brought down by the government to pave the way for light industries. In recent years, attention has shifted to the riparian land along the Nairobi River, with authorities proposing to expand the buffer zone from 30 metres to 50 metres in a bid to control flooding.

Many traders have raised concerns over what they describe as poor consultation, shifting relocation plans and the lack of a clear and secure alternative site. There are also growing fears that the process could open the door to land grabbing and cartel involvement.

Impact

For most traders at Gikomba, the market is more than just a place of business. It is their only source of livelihood. Repeated fires and demolitions have created a cycle of uncertainty, financial strain and constant rebuilding. Many small business owners say they struggle to recover after each loss, only to face another setback months later.

Calls for improved fire safety measures, fair relocation plans and meaningful engagement with authorities continue to grow louder. Without long term and sustainable solutions, Gikomba traders will continue to bear the high cost of operating in one of Nairobi’s busiest yet most vulnerable markets.
